LUNG CANCER is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, resulting in more than 150,000 deaths each year in the United States. 1 According to the American Cancer Society, 2 most lung cancers do not cause symptoms until they have spread, but some people in early stages do have symptoms. If your cancer is diagnosed earlier, treatment is more likely to be effective. See your doctor if you notice something. Common symptoms are: ●● Chronic cough or coughing up blood or sputum (spit or phlegm). ●● Chest pain that is worse with deep breathing, coughing or laughing. ●● Weight loss and loss of appetite. ●● Shortness of breath or feeling weak. ●● Infections such as bronchitis and pneu- monia that don’t go away. ●● New onset of wheezing. Advanced screening in Glendale “Similar to all cancers, the key to lung cancer survival is early detection,” says Call 818-409-8003 to learn about Adventist Health Glendale’s lung cancer screening program and services. Jill Dickson, cancer center director at Adventist Health Glendale. “We are proud to be at the forefront with cutting-edge technology and a screening program to offer the community faster detection, diagnosis and treatments.” The new DynaLync and DynaCAD Lung are two systems that provide Adventist Health Glendale physicians with the ability to identify, track and man- age relevant information to help treat their patients. DynaCAD Lung is a medi- cal imaging software system that provides enhanced imaging for patients undergoing chest CT. “DynaCAD Lung includes an inte- grated computer-aided detection (CAD) feature that serves as a second pair of eyes, assisting the physician in the detec- tion of lung nodules based on size, shape and other features,” Dickson explains. “DynaLync then allows us to track pa- tients and ensure they get the follow-up care they need.” What is low-dose CT screening? More recently, a test known as low-dose CT scan (LDCT) has been determined as a good option for people with a higher risk of lung cancer. LDCT is a quick and easy lung cancer screening scan with a minimal amount of radiation exposure. “At Adventist Health Glendale, we are com- mitted to raising awareness and improving ac- cess to LDCT,” Dickson says. “We are currently offering LDCT lung screening to individuals who meet the established high-risk criteria.” The American Cancer Society recommends annual lung cancer screenings with LDCT scans if patients qualify based on the criteria. 1 The National Lung Screening Trial Research Team. “Reduced lung cancer mortality with low-dose computed tomographic screening.” N Engl J Med 2011; 365:395-409. 2 cancer.org/cancer/lung-cancer/prevention-and-early-detection/ signs-and-symptoms.html NOVEMBER IS LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Take charge of your health Jill Dickson, Cancer Center Director HEALTHLINE QUARTERLY ° AN AWARD-WINNING PUBLICATION AND COMMUNITY CONNECTION FALL 2018 Nonprofit Org.
